Canterbury History

Chaucer Park

In the late 1970’s Medema  Homes started the subdivision with the model homes that were in the cul-de-sac off of South Lee Way. The two homes on Plymouth were the parking lot for the model homes. Medema built about 225 homes before the real estate market in Denver hit bottom in the early 1980’s. Medema went out of business and the growth of Canterbury stopped. In the following years, some of the homes sold off individually to small builders; the rest of the lots sat empty for years. In the 1990’s the real estate market started its comeback and Richmond Homes came in and built 15 models on some of the remaining lots in the neighborhood including the two lots on Plymouth. Premier West built the last homes in the neighborhood. There continues to be one lot in the neighborhood that remains empty because of an underground spring that lives there.

Chaucer Park is located at Vista View and Lewis Court within our neighborhood. Many neighborhood events sponsored by the Homeowners Association take place there including the Easter Egg Hunt, Concert in the Park and the Christmas Hayride. There is a playground and picnic shelter within the park and in 2007 a swing was dedicated for long-time resident, Conny “Santa” Paquette who played Santa for many years in the neighborhood.

Many homes in Canterbury back up to the beautiful Meadows Gold Club that is part of the Foothills Park & Recreation District that was opened in 1984. The links style layout located on South Simms Street has hosted numerous State qualifyings and championships.
